What is On-Page [Technical] SEO?

Search engines uses software called Spiders to evaluate your site (Spidering). The Spiders take  all the information that they find back to Search Engine Central (the Index).

The SEO Triangle of Google, Bing and Yahoo

When someone carries out a search, the Search Engine finds all of the pages in the Index that contain the words typed in to the search bar. It then uses a software tool (the algorithm) to decide which web page features at the top of the list.  And then where all the other pages should feature, all the way down to the bottom.

Here’s a video from Google that explains how Google works. It’s a little out-of-date but the concepts haven’t changed. If you’re confused by the jargon then take a look at my SEO Glossary of Terms.

If you understand how the Spiders work, and what they look for, you can ensure that your website has the best possible chance of appearing high in the results. This is important because

  • Only 50% or search users ever go past Page 1 on to Page 2
  • Only 10% make it to Page 3 and beyond.

The work that you carry out is called On-Page optimisation and, occasionally, Technical SEO. This is what I spend a lot of my time doing. From working on client websites, coaching clients and running training workshops and SEO Masterclasses.

This isn’t the whole story but it’s a good place to start. Don’t hesitate to get in touch for a free chat about improving the SEO for your website.
